Moving into a new apartment requires major redecoration, especially when you’re moving into a place with barren walls or terrible flooring and you can’t help but immediately feel bored just by being there.

So to make you feel a bit more at home when you move in, one of the best decorating (and health) tips I can give you: buy a rug.

For one thing, your floor has been lived on before, secondly, you’re more obligated to vacuum when it’s your property and not someone else’s, and thirdly, apartment floors are typically far less comfortable than a fuzzy, highly fashionable area rug.

So that begs the question: what’s the best rug for my apartment space? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Here are some suggestions for you to help you turn that drab apartment into a fab apartment.

1. Your Entryway

The entryway to your apartment is the first thing your guests (and you) will see. In terms of rugs, this is the one place you not only need to have a rug, but it’s also the place you’ll want the rug to be, without a doubt.

While some apartment residents opt for welcome mats outside their front door, I suggest a fashionable, yet practical, indoor runner.

This is not only a great way to bring color and liveliness to your entryway, but it’s also perfect for when you and your roommates come back after a rainy/snowy day; you no longer need to crowd around a small rug to take off your boots/wet shoes, but you now have room to walk in without dirtying your apartment floor.

2. Your Living Room/Community Space

Every apartment has that community space that you and your roommates share. Typically, it’s filled with an odd combination of different personalities and tastes, making it extremely difficult to decorate.

For this room, my recommendation is a muted color that you and your roommates all agree on – nothing too bright or bold, and nothing too plain either. Finding the right color here gives the room an extra pop and will bring all of your decorations and personalities together.

3. The Kitchen

Do NOT get a rug for your kitchen. If you are anything like me, you make an absolute mess in the kitchen, and it makes it so much harder to clean up if you make this mess on a rug. There’s a reason, believe it or not, that most kitchens are tile or hardwood (or some variation thereof): we’re all kind of disgusting, and everyone knows it.

So rather than getting large area rugs for the kitchen, which is ridiculous, get small rugs to put next to the sink and or the dishwasher, to help soak up any extra water that you’ll undoubtedly spill.

There are plenty of cute, kitchen-themed rugs that are perfect for these locations, so that’s something you will definitely want to look into – from one slob to another.

4. Your Bathroom

Bathmats are a necessity. If you don’t believe me, go a day without one. No one wants to step out of a shower onto a dirty, apartment floor.

Bathmats are typically plain, one-color rugs that no one really puts a whole lot of thought into. But, if we’re really thinking about this, everyone uses the bathroom. This is the perfect outlet to be funny, vibrant, or to just pick a unique pattern for your rug.

Sure it sounds stupid, and it kind of is, but everyone gets bathmats, and no one wants to be just like everyone else. So don’t.

5. Your Bedroom

And last, but certainly not least, you will need an area rug for your bedroom. And this, my friends, is the best part of picking out rugs for your apartment, if there is one.

When you pick a rug for your bedroom, it’s all about you. You can be as unique as you want to be. Pick your favorite color, your favorite movie/TV character, your favorite pattern, or just pick a rug that’ll tie your room together.

The best part about picking a rug for your room is it’s all about YOU. And don’t I know how much we love when that happens.

So when you go to decorate your apartment this coming semester, don’t be afraid to put rugs literally everywhere you think you might possibly walk. Go rug crazy!

Sure they may cost you a little extra here and there, but hey, when the Queen of England comes to visit your apartment this semester, you’ll be ready.
